How to Make Crib Bumper Pads
How to Make Crib Bumper Pads, Crib Bumper Inserts, Crib Bumper Forms, on this page I will share instruction information and pictures on how to make a crib bumper set including making the crib bumper pads inserts from batting. Will also show here the amount of fabric yardage to buy with a cutting guide for making your own crib bumper pad set.
After looking at the foam inserts for a crib bumper pad set I wanted to make, I found myself wondering just how well that foam insert for the crib bumper pad set was going to take the repeated washings that would be required of anything around the baby.
I wanted these Crib Bumper Pads inserts to be very washable and having recently made a afghan sized quilt for the couch, there was leftover batting. Those circumstances led to the idea shared here for making your own crib bumper pad inserts from quilt batting instead of using foam inserts. Making the inserts for the crib bumper pad set from batting can be a thrifty solution.

How to Make Crib Bumper Pads, Crib Bumper Inserts, Crib Bumper Forms
Prewash your fabric to make a crib bumper pad set. It really does matter or you'll have strange twistings and puckering after the crib bumper set gets washed.
I used just over 2 yards of sheeting muslin to make the padded crib bumper inserts that I had left from a quilting project. You may have some solid light color or white sheets you are no longer using in your linen closet that could be repurposed for making the crib bumper pad inserts from batting.
Cutting Layout for Crib Bumper Pad Inserts
I used a cutting mat and a rotary blade with clear ruler to cut these crib bumper pads inserts.
For crib bumper pad insert: Cut 12 pieces of the muslin sheeting 27 x 12 1/2 inches. Each of the 6 grayed areas in the image are cut from doubled fabric to give you a front piece and a back piece.
To make the 1st insert, take 2 pieces and fold over 1/4 inch on raw edges and press. Cut batting to fit and layer batting an inch thick on top of one piece of muslin. Place 2nd piece of muslin on top of batting and pin edges together. Also pin to mark for stitching about every 3 inches. Stitch the top muslin to the bottom on all four sides and then every three inches in order to prevent the quilted crib padding inserts from shifting.
Repeat this for all 6 crib bumper pad inserts.
TIP* On all straight sewing when you begin a seam, after 1/2 inch of sewing go in reverse to lock the stitching then continue the rest of the seam and again at the end of the seam repeat the process to make ends of a seam stay together.

Now the you have made your crib bumper pad set inserts from quilting batting, you need to make the crib bumper pad set that covers the inserts.
Here is how to make the crib bumper pad set with pink ruffle and brown piping.

In this example, I made this crib bumper set with half of the fabric in striped material and the other half in solid pink for a little girl.
The total amount of fabric to make crib bumper set is about 4 & 5/8 yards of 45 inch wide or 2 & 3/4 yard of 54 inch wide fabric for the crib bumper set. You will also need about 7/8 yard of 1 inch velcro for the tabs to attach the crib bumper set to the crib.
If you are going to do one side of the crib bumper set in one fabric and the other side in a contrasting fabric then get half of this yardage in one color with the extra bit of fabric of one color for the velcro tabs to attach the crib bumper to the crib.
Cutting Layout for One Side of Crib Bumper Pad and Tabs
Cut 6 pieces of the crib bumper fabric 13x27 inches for the one side and cut the tabs 12x4 inches.
Cutting Layout for Contrasting Fabric Side of Crib Bumper Pad
Cut remaining 6 pieces of the crib bumper 13x27 inches from your contrasting fabric.
Take 6 of the pieces and stitch the short sides together to sew together the crib bumper pad to make one long piece. I used 6 pieces of striped fabric here. Press seams open.
Now sew the sides of the other 6 pieces of contrasting color of the crib bumper pad in the same way.
If you would like to make the crib bumber pad with ruffle and piping you will also need the following:
- 1 yard satin 45 inches wide
- 1/2 yard fabric 45 inches wide for piping
- 5 yards 1/4 inch cording

To trim the crib bumper pads in satin ruffle, cut enough satin strips 3 inches wide so that you have a total of 10 yards. Using the cutting mat with a rotary cutter makes the cutting easier. Join the satin strips to be one long piece.
Fold the satin in half and press. Use a basting stitch to sew the raw edges in order to gather in making the ruffle. Use a pin to pull up basting thread gather ruffle to fit the length of crib bumper pads.
To make a piping to trim the crib bumper pads, cut 1 1/2 inch strips of the solid brown and seam together to make about 170 inches of piping. (I would rather cut some off at the end than be short!
Wrap cording in the cotton fabric and pin to keep raw edges even. Stitch close to cording using matching colored thread. I use a zipper foot to make it close to the edge stitching.
Take the 2 long pieces of crib bumper pad fabric and place right sides together and pin the short ends. Match the seams together.
Now lay the ruffle and the piping inside the crib bumper where the right sides are facing. You should have the raw edge of the piping and the raw edge of the ruffle matching the long edge of the crib bumper pad.
Pin the edges of the crib bumper pad all the way across. Check before stitching, if you start to turn fabric to rightside, is the ruffle where it should be? Stitch the top and both endsof the crib bumper pads but leave the bottom open for turning.
Turn the crib bumper pads rightside out and press. Turn 1 inch of the lower edge to the inside and press. Stitch the matched side seams to form a pocket at each seam, about an inch from bottom, for a total of 6 pockets while the bottom is still left open. This is where you will put the crib bumper pad inserts later.

Make 14 tabs for attaching the crib bumper pads from the 12x4 inch pieces. Fold each one right sides together and stitch edges to but leave about an 1 1/2 inch opening in the center. Use that opening to turn tabs right side out and press, then topstitch. Attach 2 inch pieces of velcro on each tab.
Sew through the center of each tab to attach at the seams and the ends.
Insert the crib bumber pad forms made from batting into each pocket area. Pin together the bottom and stitch close to the edge.
The picture of the crib bumper set at the top of the page doesn't show the ruffle and piping since the mom decided to put the ruffle down on the mattress, but it's the same crib bumper pad.
